They met in Maryland in early 1838. He was a 20 year old, enslaved, dock worker. She was 25, free, and employed by a prominent family as their house manager. Together they planned his escape to New York City where they wed and moved to New Bedford Massachusetts. They changed their names from Bailey to Johnson and finally settled on Douglass (with an extra ‘s’). There they started the family we know as: Frederick & Anna Murray Douglass.
